After Nora left, Maine's prison cell did not become safer. It became quieter in the way a room gets quiet when something is listening. Behind the fading squawks of the nearby prisoner, Maine saw a voidling presence and Malevolus Krane. The image turned the cell into a breach. Whatever protections the prison had, Krane or something connected to him could still reach the space around Maine, still frame the moment, still speak through the dark as if the walls were only a suggestion. Krane told Maine, "I didn't make you to be alone." Maine refused the invitation. There was no argument this time, no court theory, no attempt to reason with the thing that had already claimed authorship over him. Maine shut the eye-slot and ended the contact as much as he could. That did not solve the problem. It clarified it. Krane's influence was not somewhere far away in a laboratory memory. It was close enough to appear inside the prison thread, close enough to brush against Timbre's uncertain fate, and close enough to remind Maine that being made by someone does not mean belonging to them.
