Act 5, Episode 5, Scene 23
Ash Refuses the Path Oskar Still Offers
2026-04-09 / Gravenhurst streets
Ash and Oskar carried the Aboleth failure differently. Ash told Oskar he no longer drinks and that the Aboleth had nothing to do with him after all. It was not only a report. It was a boundary. Whatever the path had promised, whatever discovery Oskar still believed waited there, Ash had been blocked from it by the Shadow King-like figure and had come away with less faith in outside answers than before. Oskar did not push hard. He quietly reminded Ash that the path of discovery remained open and that his invitation still stood. That was very Oskar: wounded, defeated, but still able to frame loss as a doorway if someone could bear to look at it long enough. Ash was not ready for that. He said he was not ready to rely on prayer or someone other than himself. After Vithyrex, after the Aboleth split, after permanent injury and too many things deciding what his body meant, self-reliance sounded less like pride and more like survival. The two men stayed linked by the same failed mystery. They just no longer agreed on what kind of answer it was supposed to become.
