Morgan heard Jeff screaming from a room, which in most stories would have been the beginning of a rescue.

This was Morgan's story, so it became something else.

She knew people were gathering in the safe room through the fragment. She also knew Jeff was in trouble and asking for help. Rather than open the situation, negotiate, or drag one more desperate survivor into the already crowded escape problem, Morgan poison-sprayed him until he fainted.

Then she left him there.

The choice was darkly funny because it was so cleanly Morgan: practical, cruel, exhausted, and weirdly efficient. It also mattered for the campaign record. Jeff remained trapped or unconscious in the maze, and the party's rescue ethics stayed uneven. They had saved Vala, Podon, Drow, dragonborn, Arthur, and maybe more than the portal could gracefully handle. They did not save everyone.

Morgan stepped through the safe-room fragment and rejoined Maine, Arthur, Jonah, Vala, Podon, Helga, and Valbrant.

The group was closer to escape.

Jeff was not.
