Act 5, Episode 3, Scene 3
Hex Hands and Strange Jelly Beans
2026-01-18 / Adventurers Hall corridor
The Mystery Machine did what campus spectacle promised: it made strange magic feel almost casual. Maine fed in a token and received a petrified blue hand, still carrying residual dark energy. It was ugly, useful, and specific: once per short rest, it could cast Hex without spending a spell slot. For Maine, who had already been tracking Alfie's ring and thinking in terms of tools, loopholes, and leverage, the hand fit the moment perfectly. Ash used his token next. The machine gave him six strange jelly beans, each carrying a random magical effect. Trickster's Tangerine. Berserker's Blackberry. Vampire Velvet. Shocking Strawberry. Thunder Toffee. Elven Elderberry. The names sounded like carnival candy until the party remembered that homecoming's candy could still be adventurer-grade magic. The items were not grand treasures like Victor's cache. They were odd, low-control, and very VQU: dangerous enough to matter, ridiculous enough to become a joke, and regulated enough that no one had to immediately argue with Lawful about ownership.
