Act 5, Episode 3, Scene 17
The Door Wants a True Offering
2026-01-22 / Cathedral nave
Inside the ruined nave, the cathedral showed the party what kind of place Paulus Levius had built. There were scattered offerings, journals, relics, and the remains of devotion treated like an economy. The party looted what had been left behind, but the northern divine door did not open for simple taking. A blue spirit-hand communicated through Maine's Mage Hand and explained the rule: each person had to leave a true offering to pass. The word true did the work. Ash offered one gold and was punished with force. Maine offered a Chill Touch scroll and still took damage. The cathedral could tell the difference between tribute, calculation, and sincerity. It did not want payment in the way Paulus Levius had trained the place to sell absolution. It wanted something offered without cheapness or self-serving exchange. Jonah understood that difference. He offered a hand-carved stone cardinal with prayer, and the door answered with blessing instead of pain. He gained temporary strength from the act, not because he bought favor, but because he gave something real. The dungeon's central argument had opened its first door.
