Using the Rat King Crown, Ash spoke with a giant rat in the entrance storage side of the cave. The rat knew enough to make the official route feel immediately less interesting. People died along a legendary path, it said, which is exactly the kind of warning that turns into an invitation for this group.

The party had paid for three stars.

He altered Herman Winger's memory so the guide believed the group had paid for the master or legendary route, including full loot rights. The tourist dungeon's neat system of tiers, guides, waivers, and controlled danger cracked open under magical fraud almost immediately.

That choice mattered.

The party did not accidentally wander off the route. They chose to leave the intended three-star path and follow rat intelligence toward something hidden, older, and more dangerous. Herman, changed by Maine's magic, became a guide to a truth he had not knowingly sold them.

The rat would later give its name as Heathcliff.

For now, it gave them a direction.
