Titian's Last Leaf

The shell over the Queefdom failed when Titian did. For a time, Titian had been more than a person in the crisis. He had become part of a structure: a living form tied to the protection or containment around the Queefdom, holding back one kind of disaster while Point Pringle drowned in another. The city had been layered in impossible pressures for so long that even safety had started to look like a sacrifice someone else was making out of sight. Then Titian was disintegrated. As his form came apart, the shell he had been maintaining broke with him. Kaos's chaos over Point Pringle disappeared, and the city's magical crisis lost the force that had been twisting it into a supernatural disaster. That did not make the aftermath gentle. It made the scale of the loss visible. The party had survived the maze. Point Pringle had been released from Kaos's immediate grip. But Titian was gone. Jonah recovered what remained: a single leaf. Small enough to hold, heavy enough to matter. It could be grief, relic, seed, resurrection clue, verdant link, or only the last witness of what Titian had spent himself to hold together. For now, it was the shape loss took when the city started breathing again.
