The explosion did not leave the masquerade with one problem.

It left the house with too many at once.

Bon von Bovi was dead. Magical darkness had spread through Queef Tower. Guests were frightened, scattered, and suddenly aware that Baron's controlled estate was not as controlled as it had pretended to be. In the main hall, Captain Alara Vren began coordinating with Sinclair, trying to turn panic back into order before the entire evening collapsed.

But order was only one layer of the attack.

Kaya and Rice Hands moved into the darkened west wing, searching through the confusion while the house still reeled. The investigation had barely begun, and already it was pulling people apart. Every corridor created a new decision. Every room could hold evidence, a witness, a body, or something worse.

Rice Hands followed a vision into a storage closet.

That was where the assault changed shape.

Inside the illusion, the Fate Hag did not appear as a monster. She appeared as the idealized woman Rice Hands wanted to see, young, inviting, and perfectly tuned to the weakness she meant to exploit. The trap was not built to frighten him away. It was built to make him stay.

While Rice Hands experienced desire, comfort, and surrender, reality became uglier.

Kaya found the truth from outside the vision: possession, corruption, and spawned birds turning the kitchen and storage area into something wrong. The hag was not simply attacking the body. She was reaching through Rice Hands' mind and soul, making the scene intimate and fatal at the same time.

The masquerade had split into two stories.

In one, Captain Vren and Sinclair tried to manage a murder scene inside an elite political event.

In the other, Rice Hands was being drawn into a private death that looked, to him, like pleasure.

That was the horror of the Fate Hag's trap.

By the time anyone understood what kind of danger they were facing, part of Rice Hands was already somewhere else.
