The Masquerade Without Masks

Queef Tower did not welcome guests so much as measure them.

The estate rose ahead of the party as the wagon arrived, polished, theatrical, and controlled from the first step. Whatever Baron von Queef meant by masquerade, it was clear almost immediately that this would not be a night of ordinary concealment.

Sinclair was everywhere.

One version had driven the wagon. Other versions appeared in service roles around the arrival, each composed, useful, and slightly wrong in the same practiced way. To some guests, it may have looked like excellent staffing. To people paying closer attention, it suggested duplication, fiendish service, or some deeper household mechanism that allowed the Von Queef estate to be managed by repeating faces.

Dallas noticed.

The entrance itself made the rules clearer.

Guests signed a magical guestbook under the Unflickering Flame, and the book did not simply record names. It enforced them. Names were forced into Common, stripped of easy obscurity, and made legible to the house. Queef Tower wanted to know who had entered.

Then came the twist hiding inside the word masquerade.

There were no masks in the way the party expected. The event used anti-disguise magic instead. The promise of a masquerade had been inverted: rather than inviting concealment, the estate punished it. Illusions, false faces, and hidden identities had less room to breathe inside Baron's walls.

That made the party's arrival more than formal pageantry.

It was an exposure trap.

Baron had gathered nobles, adventurers, artists, rivals, old VQU threads, and dangerous witnesses into a space where identity could be controlled and watched. The Unflickering Flame sat at the center of that control, a symbol and a tool, holding its own kind of authority over the room.

The party had come to a masquerade expecting spectacle.

Queef Tower gave them surveillance first.
