Dallas found the first hard piece: a metal canister connected to Bon von Bovi's explosive death. It was not a rumor, not a theory, not another terrified guest trying to explain the darkness. It was an object, physical enough to make the investigation move.

The trail pointed toward Geargoggle in the worst possible way.

Nick read Geargoggle's thoughts and learned that the device had come from his workbag. That could have made Geargoggle the murderer, but the truth felt uglier and more useful than that. Geargoggle looked less like the mastermind and more like a convenient delivery system, someone whose tools had been turned into another person's weapon.

The room had already watched healing fail. Now it watched blame shift.

Nick pushed farther and exposed Lucian Vale's connection to the attack. Lucian's own thoughts betrayed the shape of it: regret, panic, and the unmistakable realization that taking a contract from the Abyss had been a mistake.

That changed the case.

Bon's murder was not only a courtly scandal, not only a grudge against Timberlake, and not only violence hidden inside Baron's New VQU pageantry. It was tied to an Abyss-backed contract, which meant something beyond ordinary politics had bought its way into the masquerade and used the estate's theater as a killing floor.

Ash moved before Lucian could slip away.

He tackled him, turning accusation into custody while Lawful officers arrived to take control of the scene. Somewhere in the chaos, an unknown caster helped hold Lucian in place, another unseen hand in a night full of hidden hands.

By then, Queef Tower had given the party more than a murderer.

It had given them a pattern.

Geargoggle had likely been used. Lucian had been bought. Bon had been killed. Rice Hands had been taken. Nick had been changed. The hags had attacked the house while an Abyss contract moved through the murder investigation underneath.

The masquerade was no longer a single crime.

It was a door into the next conspiracy.
