The party woke into comfort so sudden it felt suspicious.
They were no longer in the arena. They were inside Jebus's lamp studio, a strange private space full of floating paintings, animated scrolls, glitching statues, shifting drinks, smoke, and half-finished ideas. Their bodies received the relief of a full rest. Their nerves took longer to believe it.
Jonah was ecstatic.
He ran into the Creator's presence with the joy of someone whose faith had not only answered, but answered loudly. Jebus greeted him like a beloved follower and treated the rest of the party with the casual warmth of a force that thought of creation as both business and art.
Maine asked about Victor.
Jebus explained that Victor had been given a choice. He could leave with the party, or he could remain behind with Exaba and that unresolved story. Victor chose to stay. The rescue had saved the group from the Game Master's machinery, but it had not brought every ally home.
Then the deal came due.
Jebus had negotiated with Trixie to pull them out. One signature had opened the way, but returning to Jericha required the rest of them to sign. The contract would bind them to Baron Von Queef's new Queef Intelligence Initiative at New VQU.
The party questioned the terms.
Ash asked about conflicts with his existing obligations. Maine read the contract carefully with magic, looking for hidden teeth. Nick hesitated because paperwork from a divine force still sounded like danger, even if Jonah trusted him. Dhaz weighed the offer against survival and direction.
The deal was simple in shape and strange in consequence: serve the new VQU plan, follow their will and heart inside that mission, and do not fall out of the path Jebus had created for them. Failure meant becoming like one of his unfinished NPCs: half-made concepts left in the smoke.
One by one, they signed.
Survival became employment.
Rescue became a contract.
The next chapter of their lives had a name now: QII.
