The first thing waiting outside Astrid's shop was not a faction agent, a monster, or another invitation. It was a machine. Bolted near the wall outside the Little Shope of Horticulture, the contraption hummed with faint magical energy. Its plaque named the Benevolent Lodge of Mystery Solvers as its provider, and the logo identified it as a Mystery Machine. It looked like a vending device, but the party could tell quickly that it was not selling ordinary goods. It only took special tokens. That made it part advertisement, part public mystery, and part magical distribution system. The party inspected it and learned the public story: the Lodge was an old team of investigators who had spent decades solving supernatural cases, exposing hoaxes, and collecting artifacts. They were not adventuring as actively anymore, but they had found a way to circulate some of that strange inventory back into the world. The Mystery Machines would dispense enchanted trinkets, potions, and sometimes legendary relics to anyone who found the right token. In Gravenhurst, even a vending machine came with lore. The slot was protected by runic safeguards, which made simple tricks risky. But the inspection revealed something useful: a token was already jammed partway inside. Dhaz managed to work it loose, flatten it enough to read, and found the Lodge's mark on one side, a key entering a lock. On the other side was a fact that felt more like a warning than trivia: the first Lodge token had been forged in a midnight ritual no one remembered attending. Then Dhaz put the token back in properly. The machine accepted it. What came out looked at first like butcher-wrapped meat, tied in white parchment. Inside was not food but a petrified blue left hand. It did not match Victor's missing hand, and it would not solve the problem of his stump. Instead, the item identified as Kingston's Hand, a strange relic able to cast Hex. The city had changed while the party was away. The pop-up machines Astrid had warned them about were now more than background weirdness. They were active objects in Gravenhurst's new adventuring economy, offering magic through a token system tied to an old mystery-solving lodge and rituals no one remembered. Kingston's Hand entered the party's orbit as the first proof. From then on, a Mystery Machine was not scenery. It was a question with a slot in it.
