Dinner at the Little Shope of Horticulture gave the party a rare pause. Not peace, exactly. Gravenhurst did not feel peaceful after the masquerade. Bon von Bovi was dead. Rice Hands was dead. Nick had come back changed. Walter was still captured. The Thieves Guild and the Black Ward had both been mishandled badly enough that neither seemed likely to be impressed. Lawful attention had grown harder to ignore. But there was food, a table, and Astrid Ironhoof looking at them with the exhausted fondness of someone who had watched them survive far too much in too little time. She thanked them. Then she turned to Jonah and told him he was a good presence around town. In a city thick with gloom, doom, violence, and opportunists, people needed a reminder that goodness could still walk around in public without becoming naive. For Jonah, that mattered. His faith and kindness had not solved every problem, but Astrid named them as something Gravenhurst still needed. Then she told them her own next step. Astrid was accepting her old position at VQU. With the school reopening, she could not pass up the opportunity. She made it clear that this did not mean vanishing from their lives, but it did mean she would no longer be only the local alchemist waiting in the shop while they stumbled back from disaster. That changed the shape of their support system. Then Astrid made them take stock. Nick had found the murderer at the masquerade, but not the orchestrator. Victor's dragon, Walter, was still in Githyanki hands. Their attempts to work with both the Thieves Guild and the Black Ward had gone badly enough to leave the city factions unimpressed. The Grim Reaper and the Lawful still hung over the larger situation. Every thread they had touched seemed to have multiplied instead of resolved. And now they were level four. Astrid did not frame that as a prize. She framed it as responsibility. They had come far quickly, and speed made waste dangerous. The party needed to decide what future they wanted, because Gravenhurst was no longer handing them one clear next step. When they left the shop after dinner, the city outside was waiting with all of its unfinished problems. The pause was over. Choice came next.
