The stash door had refused every answer except the one nobody wanted. The key was probably in the Rat King's nest. That turned the party back toward the chamber they had been trying to avoid. The smaller rats moved through the sewer with purpose, not as scattered animals but as pieces of a single attention. Jonah suggested treating the fight tactically: manage the closest rats first, keep the group from being surrounded, and avoid feeding the hive-body more bodies than necessary. Ash tested the edge of that plan with his fists. He crushed one rat, then another, only to watch the bodies get pulled away by their tails into the sewer mass. The dead rats did not feel removed from the problem. They felt reclaimed. Maine's first blast missed, and the Rat King answered by showing the party what the chamber really was. Rats erupted from the ground and dragged Maine across the room. The hive-body tried to bite him immediately. Maine survived the first rush and escaped with a scroll of Misty Step, but the fight had already changed. The Rat King was not merely waiting in its nest. It could move creatures through rat-space, reshape the field, and use the surrounding swarm as extensions of itself. The sewer became a pressure chamber. Dhaz fought nearly blind in the dark, cutting and splashing acid at rats as they came. Blastbelle hurled fire into the Rat King. Jonah pushed forward through bites to keep Ash alive, pouring healing into him after the Rat King's jaws tore Ash down with poison and teeth. Around them, the smaller rats kept swarming: biting Maine, snapping at Jonah, crawling into every space the group tried to claim. Then the Rat King cursed Maine with misfortune. The aura hit like a magical wrongness, twisting attack and defense against him just as he needed precision. Maine held on anyway. He drove lightning into the Rat King, followed with mind-splintering force, and kept trying to cut through the hive before it could repair itself. The Rat King was close to another turn, close to dragging someone else in, close to absorbing rats back into itself and becoming harder to kill. It did not get the chance. Maine chose certainty. Magic Missile struck the Rat King in three clean blows. One blast tore away an arm of rats. The second tore away the other. The last knocked the head loose from the body, leaving the remaining mass to collapse into itself as the hive-mind broke. The rest of the rats scattered. For the first time since entering that section of sewer, the chamber belonged to the party instead of the swarm. Ash checked the refuse pile near the nest. Beneath the filth and trash, he found what the failed door had been asking for: a key that looked like it would fit the stash lock. The pile also held an old adventurer's bag with two healing potions and three gold, scraps left in the Rat King's hoard by someone who had not survived or returned. The obstacle was dead. The stash key was in hand. And just as the mission seemed ready to move again, CC stepped into the moment with a warning that would turn the key into a trust test.
