Act 2, Episode 5, Scene 12
Podon in the Sewer Dark
2025-03-02 / Sewer corridor outside hideout room
The voices outside the room pulled the party away from the Power Nine before the book could become comfortable. Blastbelle warned them that the sewers were not empty territory. Thieves Guild people moved through parts of it. Graven Scourge could be nearby. So could anyone drifting toward the drug den. The party still needed the stash, but first they needed to understand what was happening outside the door. Ash scouted ahead. To one side, the sewer water carried more than filth. A large constrictor snake floated in the channel, still enough to blend into the trash unless someone looked carefully. To the other side, the commotion resolved into two figures tormenting someone slumped forward near the corridor. The victim was familiar. Podon Zopip Calbar Locust had appeared before in the group's path, a forest gnome hermit and monk-like wanderer whose life already seemed tangled with loss and Boost. He had been searching for his daughter, and the sewers made grim sense as the next place he would look. Now two thugs were harassing him: one with a rat on their shoulder, another with a knife, letting cruelty pass for entertainment. Blastbelle did not recognize them as hers. Maybe they were random sewer trash. Maybe they belonged to the Graven Scourge. Either way, they were not Valara's people, and they were not friends. The party debated talking, waiting, or attacking. Ash favored the fastest version of rescue: move first, punch first, ask questions after everyone dangerous had fewer teeth. Dhaz was less certain, which mattered, but the decision tipped toward action. Then the sewer punished the rush. Ash slipped forward and nearly reached the thugs, but a gray ooze clinging to the wall struck first, catching him before the rescue could begin. The attempted ambush became a tangled fight immediately: ooze from the stone, thugs near Podon, the snake in the water, and the party still trying to push out from the room's doorway. Podon was not helpless. When one of the thugs swung at him, he answered with Magic Missile, proof that fear and exhaustion had not emptied him out. Maine brought Ash back up with Aid after the ooze dropped him, sacrificing his last stronger spell slot to keep the rescue from collapsing. Jonah moved forward with the newly found book in hand and called sacred force into the fight. Dhaz tried to keep the situation from becoming murder-chaos, then got dragged into the violence anyway. The sewer kept adding problems. The snake constricted Maine, then Dhaz, breaking a bridge and dragging Dhaz into the filthy water. Another ooze pressed from the side. The thugs struck at Podon and the party. Somewhere to the north, an unseen archer started firing into the fight, bolts cutting through enemies from a place the party could not yet identify. By the end of the scramble, Ash had crushed through the last close threats with fists, kicks, and a brutal finish on the snake. Dhaz hauled himself out of the water soaked in sewer filth. Podon was still alive. The thugs and monsters had been stopped. But the fight had revealed more than danger. Podon was still searching. The Graven Scourge problem was close. The sewer was full of creatures, drug traffic, and hidden watchers. And someone with a bow had just helped them from the dark without stepping fully into the light.
