The Puzzle
2098 MB / Second wire chamber / mirror puzzle
## **EPISODE 4, SCENE 3 – “The Puzzle”** [NARRATION] The brainspace beneath their feat felt like walking through a desolate farm field that should be thriving. Every inch of Ash’s mind was collapsing in on itself like a guilty secret held one second too long. The second chamber was colder. Not temperature. Atmosphere. Emotionless. Calculated. Designed not to kill but to humiliate first. [NARRATION: SFX] _WHHRMMM..._ A low, electric hum, like a brain trying to remember its own name. [NARRATION] The walls were mirrors—too many. All angles. A kaleidoscope of selves, fractured and watching. The floor was glass. Below it: more mirrors. Above: more eyes. At the center of the room stood a column of synaptic metal, pulsing with three lock-seals and no key. And two pedestals. Waiting. Always waiting. **JONAH** (peering into the mirrored floor): “Well. That’s unsettling.” **MAINE** (circling the column): “It’s some kind of pairing mechanism. I think two of us have to stand on these.” **VICTOR** (already halfway onto one): “Oh good! Love a low-stakes death trap.” [NARRATION] The column shimmered. Voices echoed—not from outside, but inside. Voices they shouldn’t know. Words they shouldn’t remember. [NARRATION: SFX] _SHHHRINK._ _FZZZZT._ _KA-CHUNK._ Each failed attempt twisted the mirror maze into a tighter knot. The floor grew slick with anxiety. **VOID-ASH** said nothing. Just watched from the corner of the chamber, as if this was all very predictable. **NICK** "It doesn't matter how we solve it. We just have to solve it. Should I try casting Fireball?" **DARIUS** (scanning the reflections): “What if it’s trying to show us something we’re refusing to see?” [NARRATION] They tried combinations. Pairings. Patterns. Strength and weakness. Light and dark. Guilt and indifference. None of it mattered. The reflections didn’t reflect. They judged. And then... [NARRATION: SFX] _CRACK._ _SLINK._ _TWANG._ **VICTOR** (whispering, surprised): “I think I... solved it?” [NARRATION] He hadn’t meant to. He just stepped backward at the wrong time while Jonah tapped his staff in frustration. The locks clunked open. Not because they learned something. Because they cheated. Or maybe just bypassed the point entirely. **MAINE** (flatly): “Was that it?” **JONAH** (looking guilty): “I was about to say something really profound, too.” [NARRATION] A panel opened at the top of the column. Inside, a small, veined wire—like a severed idea, still twitching. **DARIUS** (climbing up): “Let’s not question miracles.” [NARRATION: SFX] _SNAP._ The wire is pulled free. _GGRRRRRRIIIKK._ All the mirrors crack. Not all at once. Slowly. Like betrayal. Then— [NARRATION: SFX] _SHATTER._ A thousand shards. A thousand selves. And the ceiling is gone. Above them: a spiral of suspended neuron platforms, flickering. A new path. A familiar voice. **SHADOW DARIUS** (from a broken reflection): “Still haven’t made your choice, hmm?” **DARIUS** (growling, blade ready): “You’re not real.” **SHADOW DARIUS** (laughing): “Neither is this place. But it’s still going to kill you.” [NARRATION] A threatening dirge of void imps began to prowled from the shattered glass. Tiny silhouettes with jagged limbs and eyes like keyholes. **VICTOR** (backpedaling): “Okay. Time to go.” [NARRATION] They ran—not out, but up. The spiral platforms crumbled behind them as they climbed, leapt, fought. [NARRATION: SFX] _CLASH._ _SNAP._ _SCREEEEEECH._ The void howled like it wanted to keep them. [NARRATION] Two wires now in hand. One left. And the Aboleth was getting closer.
